The CollectionSpace team is pleased to announce the release of CollectionSpace version 2.0. This release is the culmination of a year-long team effort to improve functionality, lessen the complexity of creating new functionality, and to provide greater support for implementers of stand-alone installations and their in-house development staff. New user-facing functionality includes: Roles and permissions enforcement; media handling; hierarchical vocabularies; import/export; reporting; advanced search; and structured dates. A few of the highlights are below. Media Handling: Provides the ability to upload a media file to the system or to link to a media file stored in an outside digital asset management system. Date Entry Templates: Provides the ability to create records from existing records or to pre-defined templates for specific data entry needs. Reports: Reports are defined and installed in the system via integration with LGPL (GNU Lesser General Public License) JasperReports. Custom reports may be created using JasperReport's iReport client application software. This software is downloadable for free from the JasperSoft website but is GPL (General Public License) licensed, and is therefore not included with a standard CollectionSpace installation. Import/Export: CollectionSpace import functionality supports importing files in XML (Extensible Markup Language). Any relationships present in the data are preserved on import. In addition, CollectionSpace has been integrated with the Talend Open Studio for ETL (extract, transform, load) workflows. Structured dates: Provides a much greater degree of freedom when adding dates with beginning and end ranges and degrees of certainty. This enhanced date handling function provides the ability to tie objects to eras or periods rather than to specific dates. These dates are particularly useful for cataloging activities and the retrospective conversion of aging documentation. Internationalization: All label values in the client-side interface are now provided by the server-side interface via the user interface specification, thereby creating support for multi-lingual versions of the software. Improvements to back-end infrastructure include: Simplified core services: To make it easier and faster to create new services (especially for common cases like new authority types). Simplified user interface: Template mechanism and supporting application layer logic to make it easier and faster to create new editor pages (e.g., for new record types, new authority types). Re-worked core configuration description: To build more of the configuration (across the layers) from a single source, and simplifying the administrative experience in extending and customizing CollectionSpace for an implementation. Upgraded the core platform to use PostgreSQL: To improve performance, address shortcomings in searching, and provide a platform for later GIS-based (geographic information system) search enhancements. Improved build and deploy mechanisms: To support nightly updates that can be more easily deployed by early-adopters. Upgraded CollectionSpace Services Architecture: In conjunction with the release of version 5.5 of the Nuxeo Enterprise Platform. This work included a reconfiguration of core services based upon Apache and Tomcat to match Nuxeo support for this more streamlined approach. CollectionSpace is a collaborative effort driven by museum and higher education professionals. Our goals are two-fold: 1. Work together as a community to develop a well designed, cost effective, high quality software application that museums and related heritage organizations can use to manage their collections and share information about those collections online and 2. Re-define the ways in which collections information is collected, managed, preserved, leveraged, and published. CollectionSpace is made possible by the visionary support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. CollectionSpace is freely distributed via the ECL 2.0 license, and an active developer community works together to enhance and improve CollectionSpace with each new release.
