CSpace Community:

Our next 5.0 profile is up and ready for testing - Design Materials!

I've added a new worksheet to the v5.0 testing doc, link below:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iVjxDBvyjglNg3Q4vdUIISMRcUuJsHNKg23L83Gk-eU/edit?usp=sharing

Even if you're not part of the design materials community, please pick up a test and run through it - it will take less than a half hour of your time but will be a huge benefit to all CSpace implementers.

Thanks, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Megan

Just got a great question - what exactly are design materials?

The materials collections using CSpace are primarily lending libraries housed within schools of design, which are used by students and faculty to learn more about the materials they use to create works of art and architecture. It's a place where you can check out a piece of Plexiglas, search to find which types of wood are rot resistant, or learn how different manufacturing processes affect material strength or appearance.

A great definition, adapted from the Harvard Graduate School of Design's Material Collection Primerhttps://guides.library.harvard.edu/ld.php?content_id=22309919:

"The collection consists of material samples ranging from innovative new materials to those found everyday in the built environment. The collection is one for designers, different than those for material scientists, yet it is not a typical material sample library found at a design firm that is organized by project use or application. Materials collections place the emphasis on material composition and functional traits of the material samples, encouraging users to rethink conventional applications and promote material experimentation in design practice. "

We have a great consortium of collections using the profile, led by the Harvard GSD, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Parsons School of Design (@ the New School).

Thanks for the question!
